According to KPMG, the average cost of back-to-school items per child would be $268 in the 2022 school year, up 9% from the previous year. But if you calculate thoroughly, according to National Retail Federation (NRF), families will spend $849 in total on school stuff. Parent & Teacher Stuff for 2022 Back to School Academic Year

We reached out to TeacherLists, a terrific free platform that allows parents and teachers to quickly share and access school supply lists, to gain some insight into what school supply lists might look like this year. "As the season progresses, we're seeing more supply lists tailored to students who will be learning at home," says Dyanne Griffin of TeacherLists. "The elements on the lists are generally the same as a standard list for students returning to class, but there are some variances," says the researcher.

Here are some of the ways, according to Dyanne, the back-to-school lists shared by schools and districts have changed this year:

• Lists are being published by schools and districts for students in the classroom as well as students learning remotely. The following is an example of a district's list.

• Notebooks, pocket folders, crayons, pens, sticky notes, scissors, glue sticks, markers, highlighters, filler paper, pencils, colored pencils, dry erase markers, and erasers remain the most popular things. However, because students cannot share supplies, TeacherLists is witnessing an increase in demand for these products. "Whereas before, a group of pupils might have shared a bucket of dry erase markers," Dyanne explains, "today, each child must have their own supplies."

• To help promote a healthy classroom, there is an increase in hygiene and cleaning supplies. In-school lists also include facial tissues, hand wipes, disinfectant wipes, and other PPE items (such as face masks).

It's worth noting that the in-school listings are becoming more detailed. Plastic folders, for example, are preferred over paper because they are easier to clean, and pre-sharpened pencils are preferred so that the children do not need to use pencil sharpeners.

Dyanne says they're getting requests for little whiteboards, headphones, earbuds, and pencil sharpeners on the virtual-learning lists. For further information, go to TeacherLists.
