History of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, commemorates the Battle of Puebla, in which the Mexican army defeated France in 1862. It is not, contrary to the popular creed, Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16. A large population is amazed to learn that the day is more popular in the United States than in Mexico.

According to our study, the majority of the honoring takes place in Puebla, with very sporadic acknowledgment elsewhere in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo, however, is a yearly celebration in which friends congregate to gorge themselves on tacos, fajitas, salsa, and margaritas.
