Renée Zellweger has demonstrated why she is a two-time Oscar winner (for her parts in Judy in 2020 and Cold Mountain in 2004), since she possesses one of the broadest acting ranges! Anyone who disagrees should look no farther than the 52-year-old Hollywood actress's spectacular metamorphosis for her role as convicted killer Pam Hupp in The Thing About Pam!
But it's not just her unrecognisable appearance (thanks to a combination of facial prosthetics, including a fake nose, a strawberry blonde wig, and a fat suit) that has wowed us. The first trailer for the NBC true crime drama has finally been released, and we can confirm that Zellweger truly embodied the "notorious," to quote Zellweger herself, character.
The trailer for The Thing About Pam, which follows the 2011 murder of Hupp's friend Betsy Faria (played by American Housewife's Katy Mixon), whets our curiosity for the entire six-episode limited series. The murder case captivated the entire world after it was broadcast on Dateline, and it became one of the show's most popular cases in history; and based on the tremendous level of interest in the case, it then had its own podcast, which is still one of the most downloaded podcasts on iTunes to this day. Zellweger must have felt a lot of pressure!
Naturally, we're curious to see how the Chicago actress will portray the insurance worker who was involved in at least two murders over a five-year period (before eventually being jailed after a prolonged cover-up.) Even more so because Zellweger admitted in an interview at BlumFest on October 1st that it was difficult to get into character because there was so little to rely on due to the paucity of records associated with the case.
Zellweger stated that she was ""I'm just going to keep my head down and do my work, try to explore different personality types and try to understand whether or not that is psychosis or solipsism or a combo of both, whatever it might be." In any case, it's going to be intriguing, and there's a lot to learn."
In terms of her unrecognizability, Zellweger stated that hearing that was the highest compliment an actress could receive! "Oh, gosh, if you don't identify an actor or an actress in a performance, that's a fantastic praise," the Jerry Maguire star told Vanity Fair. "You're not telling your own tale," she added.
The first episode of The Thing About Pam will air on Tuesday, March 8th at 10/9c. We've already marked our calendars!
